Katie Taylor

The lightweight three/four times World Champion and five times European Champion will face new opponents in London. Taylor is the strong favourite for the 60kg weight division, always has been the favourite and will continue to be the favourite despite the migration of other boxers into her weight category.

Because only three divisions will be fought for at The Excel Arena this summer (flyweight, lightweight, middleweight), those in heavier weight division boxers, who believe they can come down to 60kg, will do so for the inaugural Olympic event.
Taylor is the most explosive amateur in the world and has been named the best female boxer in the sport twice. Her dominance since her first European Championship in Norway in 2005 has not diminished, with qualification in China probably arriving easier than she had expected, Romania’s Michaela Lacatus defaulting because of injury in the quarter-finals and handing Taylor the qualification ticket.

Coached by her father Peter, the former international soccer player and Leeds supporter is Ireland’s strongest medal candidate at the Games.
