Eye Shadows for Close-Lidded Eyes

Techniques With Eye Shadows for Close-Lidded Eyes

Flirty peepers can seem harder to achieve if you've got close-lidded eyes, but it's all about creating an illusion. The term close-lidded means that your lids cover more of your eyes, which is an exotic look in itself, but can make them look smaller than they are. While this eye shape is most common among Asians, people of any ethnicity can be born with close-lidded eyes. They say that eyes are the windows to your soul -- try these simple makeup techniques to open yours up.

Highlight

It might seem logical to apply dark makeup to draw attention to your eyes, but the harsh contrast will only making them seem smaller. Makeup artist Danielle Gray for "Style and Beauty Doctor" recommends highlighting to makes those peepers seem brighter and bigger. On the area of your lid that covers your eye, apply a light shade of ivory or champagne eye shadow. Shimmer is fine, but don't go overboard for daytime wear. Using the same shade, subtly highlight your brow bone.

Create a Crease

Faking a deeper crease is the most crucial step to making your eyes appear bigger. Choose a tan or taupe eye shadow for a more natural look, or try your hand at a smokey eye with charcoal tones or colors. Start from the outer edge of your eye and apply the shade halfway to the center of your eye in a curved swipe. Blend thoroughly until the arched line from application is no longer visible. Start slowly: It's easier to add more eye shadow than to remove it and start from scratch.

Define

There's nothing like eyeliner on the upper lids to really open up close-lidded eyes. The only problem is that liquid eyeliner tends to smudge easily on your eye shape because it rubs against your brow bone. Opt for a pencil eyeliner or try wetting a dark eye shadow and applying it with a thin applicator brush -- it dries ultra quickly. Draw a line on your upper lid that thickens and flares slightly upward toward the ends.

Finishing Touches

Never skimp on mascara or ignore proper brow grooming. Since these are what frame your eyes, they help draw attention to gorgeous made-up eyes. Don't apply too many coats of mascara -- it will only overpower your eye shadow and appear fake. Instead, apply only a few coats and use an eyelash curler to really extend them upward and make eyes look rounder. If your brows are sparse, fill them in with a pencil that's a shade lighter -- thicker brows also make eyes appear larger.
